About Old Bridge, NJ

Old Bridge Township is a municipality located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Originally called Madison Township, residents approved a name change in 1975 to avoid confusion with the similarly-named borough of Madison in Morris County. Located across Raritan Bay from Staten Island, Old Bridge grew from an agricultural community following World War II and the construction of residential housing developments. Today, Old Bridge is a suburb for workers commuting to Newark and New York City.

Frequently Asked Questions about Criminal Defense in Old Bridge, NJ

What are my rights after I have been arrested by the police?

After you are arrested by the police, you have the right to be informed of the charges you are being arrested for. You also have the right to appear before the trial court as soon as practical, usually within 48 hours, to be formally advised of the charges against you and to have your pretrial release or detention set. If the police wish to question you after your arrest, they must also advise you of your Miranda rights, which include the right to remain silent and the right to speak to an attorney prior to questioning and have your attorney present during questioning.

Is there a different court system for juveniles who commit crimes?

In New Jersey, when juveniles commit criminal offenses, by default, they are put under the jurisdiction of the family courts for an adjudication of delinquency. Although juvenile courts function much like a regular criminal court and juveniles are entitled to all the same legal and constitutional rights, the purpose behind the juvenile system is to rehabilitate so that the juvenile does not commit criminal conduct in the future and punishments for adjudications of delinquency are tailored accordingly. However, under certain circumstances, the state can request to have a juvenile “waived” into regular criminal court, where they can be tried as if they were an adult.
